Robert L. Thompson, formerly Director of Agriculture
and Rural Development at the World Bank, made a presentation to the Cordell
Hull Institute's Trade Policy Roundtable in Washington, DC, on April 24
on the "Moment of Truth on the Liberalization of Agricultural Trade".
Dr Thompson is the Chairman of the International Food and Agricultural
Trade Policy Council, based in Washington, DC.
Rubens Barbosa, the Brazilian ambassador to the United
States, commented on the presentation. Among other points, he said that
agreement on the substantial liberalization of agricultural trade was
critical to Brazil in the Doha Round negotiations, along with anti-dumping
reform. Achieving both was also, he said, a prerequisite for agreement
in the negotiations on a Free Trade Area of the Americas.
